RESPONSE TOWARDS EDUCATION IN EMERGENCIES

The summer of 2010 produced Pakistan’s worst flooding in 80 years. Approximately 20 million people, about one-ninth of the population, have been displaced by the disaster. As many as 74 districts of the country are badly hit.

Worst-ever floods in Pakistan's history has affected around 3.6 million people in Sindh specially in upper Sindh including Kashmor, Kamber-Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Gotki, Shikarpur, Sukkur, Kahirpur  This recent wave of flood affected the 19 districts of Sindh The unprecedented floods have not only wrecked havoc to the civic infrastructure, but also dealt a severe blow to the education system in Sindh, as a large number of school buildings, particularly in the Katcha area have collapsed or damaged beyond repair after submerging in floodwater. Due to this destruction the academic activities has come to a halt and children are roaming aimlessly in and around the camps, their temporary places of refuge.

Some of the flood affected population has started going back to their place of origin but many are still in temporary camps or shelters without appropriate learning spaces.

Therefore CGN-P felt the need to address the educational needs of flood-affected children through setting up of temporary learning centres. CGN-P in collaboration with UNICEF started two initiatives to cater the educational needs in emergency situation. In one venture ECE centers are established to foster the learning needs of children of age group 3-5 years in four districts. In the second venture volunteers have been trained for Temporary Learning Centers that are set up for all the age group in 10 districts in Sindh. Representatives from local NGO’s from the respective district will facilitate the running of these TLC’s. CGN-P will supervise camps for ECE children.
